Tips to help you work with your medications.

It is very important that your pharmacist is aware of all the things you are taking to effectively manage your risk. Every time you have a new prescription filled, ask your pharmacist what the drug is used for, how and when to take it with other medications, and whether it will interact with other medications. Get to know the look of a pill, and talk to your pharmacist if a new batch looks different.  Ask if any new medicine will interact with what you are currently taking.  Some medications even cause you to be more sensitive to the sun and/or heat.  Also, ask if the medication is toxic to  you in any way over time.  For example your hearing.
To manage medications, start with an up-to-date list that includes what each medication is used for, the proper strength, and dosing instructions. That will be helpful if you forget or if a family member helps you with your regimen.
Use a pill dispenser with multiple compartments, such as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and bedtime. These dispensers are available as simple plastic boxes that you fill each week or high-tech electronic dispensers, complete with alarms and reminders sent to your smartphone. Your pharmacy may also offer a handy dispensing method, known as bubble packing, that packages single doses of several medications in one plastic pack. If you’re tech-savvy, tablet and smartphone apps can remind you to take your medications and can even track your adherence.  Currently, there are hearing aids that can remind you to take your medication.

  1. Educate yourself on all your medications.
  2. Keep a current list that includes everything (prescribed and non-prescribed).
  3. Use a medication manager (pill box, pouches, apps, electronic dispenser).
  4. Keep family involved.
  5. Be prepared (don’t run out).
