Speech in Noise

by: Dr. Michelle Looney
As audiologists, we are often told “I hear well in one on one situations, but when I’m in the presence of background noise I have a lot of trouble hearing”. This situation is common for our patient’s because of how complex an environment is when background noise is present. Background noise masks specific sounds of speech, such as the higher pitched consonants that provide clarity of the words you are hearing. Hearing in background noise is difficult for people with normal hearing, add hearing loss and the situation becomes even more strenuous. As the brain tries to separate the background noise from the speech and fill in missing information, it can become fatigued. To learn more about your ability to hear in the presence of background noise or ways to improve hearing in those situations please contact us for more information.
