The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a Pandemic a little over a year ago. The United States has had over 31 million reported cases. With such a large population affected, research is being conducted to determine long term side effects. The Mayo Clinic reports that although COVID-19 seen as a disease that primarily affects the lungs, it can damage many other organs as well including the heart and brain. In addition, an article released on March 22nd reports that hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo were also among the complaints from COVID-19 patients. At least one ongoing clinical study found that up to 7.6% of COVID-19 patients suffered from hearing loss, 14.8% complained of tinnitus and 7.2% reported vertigo. Kevin Munro, professor audiology at The University of Manchester reports “While this is alarming, caution is required as it is unclear if changes to hearing are directly attributed to COVID-19 or to other factors, such as treatments to deliver urgent care.” Further research regarding the link between COVID-19 and hearing loss is being conducted.
