HIPAA COMPLIANCE TRAINING

WHAT IS IT AND WHY DO WE NEED IT?

According to Wikipedia, HIPAA is an Act To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to improve portability and continuity of health insurance coverage in the group and individual markets, to combat waste, fraud, and abuse in health insurance and health care delivery, to promote the use of medical savings accounts, to improve access to long-term care services and coverage, to simplify the administration of health insurance, and for other purposes.

We need it “To improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the health care system, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), Public Law 104-191, included Administrative Simplification provisions that required HHS to adopt national standards for electronic health care transactions and code sets, unique health identifiers, and security.” as far as the US Department of Health and Human Services is concerned.

WHO NEEDS HIPAA TRAINING?

Anyone who works with, has access to, manages, or comes in contact with medical records is required to undergo HIPPA compliance training.

This includes pretty much all staff members including the doctors, front desk staff, and supporting staff as well. Hear Billing Solutions (HBS) offers HIPAA compliance training to our clients once a year, as required by the law. Our training fosters a sense of accountability to staff members when it comes to protected information. In addition, it gives a sense of ownership by making us realize why all of these steps are so important.

HIPAA compliance training covers a wide range of information in regards to effectively protecting patient health records. A few things that are more (or less) common sense and HBS covers in our training courses are things like:

  • How to go about reporting an incident?
  • How to deal with password maintenance?
  • How soon after a new employee comes on board, does HIPAA training need to be performed?
  • How long is it necessary to hold onto records?

Documenting the HIPAA training itself is a HIPAA requirement, but often times is disregarded, missed, or forgotten altogether.

These examples are just the tip of the iceberg! Our training covers all of this, and then some. We come to you, locally in the Raleigh area, or not; we’re here for you. Our staff is committed to bringing you the information you need and helping you to understand why all of it is so important.

We want to give a special thank you to Triangle Hearing Services in Cary, NC for allowing us to come visit their office and help complete their HIPAA compliance training for their newly hired team member.
